A barcode speeds up work only when the data behind it is organized. A scanner that finds the wrong item simply performs the mistake faster, so implementation must begin with unique identifiers and a clear labeling process.
Use unique and stable identifiers
Products supplied with a manufacturer code can usually keep it. For internal items create a simple rule, but avoid encoding information that changes often, such as price. GS1 standards are the primary reference when identifiers must work across a broader supply chain.
- Never reuse the code of a retired product.
- Give different variants different codes.
- Verify that the printed label matches the product record.
Choose devices for the working environment
A USB scanner is practical at a fixed till, while cordless equipment may suit a warehouse. Test label size and material, scanning distance and lighting before printing a large batch.
Add scanning at the important control points
The greatest value comes when the same identifier is used for receiving, counting, transferring and selling. This reduces manual typing and makes the source of a difference easier to locate.
